2–4 Requesting God’s help in the present
5–7 Need for God’s help

  • “Ascents”—Psalms 120–134 were probably sung by Jewish pilgrims going up to Jerusalem for a feast, probably the Passover.
  • Verse 4 gives the answer to verse 3, the judgment on slanderers. Broom tree coals were long-lasting. What is the point?
  • These nations (v. 5) were not near each other, and were considered barbarians. How does that help you understand the psalmist’s feelings here?
